 Dorothy Lucille Tipton – Musician, 1914 – 1989.

ALIAS: Billy Lee Tipton

From an early age Dorothy Lee Tipton found a passion for the saxophone and in the 1930s when big bands and swing music were awakening America after the great depression, she wanted nothing else but to play. With incredible talent and a clear dedication, she couldn’t see herself doing anything else in her life.

But it wasn’t enough to have talent and drive, as a women she came up against one challenge after another. It may have been a time for creativity in music but the repression of women in every industry was as strong as ever. She was female and women didn’t play music in a professional sense.

In 1933 at the age of 18 she moved to Oklahoma in the hope of getting work. But the competition was fierce among musicians and bars & clubs would never hire a woman, no matter how talented.

So when she'd heard of a band in need of a sax player in Muskogee Dorothy knew it was an opportunity too good to pass up.  Knowing they would never hire her as a woman she bound her breasts, found the perfect outfit of sleek, white pants and a dark jacket and became Billy. She got the job.

She never pretended to be a man as such in the early days, she just wore men’s clothes in order to play in the front line. However eventually Dorothy adopted the Billy persona full time and life as a musician became much easier. As a woman she would have had to fight every step of the way to achieve her dream. As Billy the music world respected her talent.
